Theoretically, an entire ERP system could be built with Excel, including inventory management, bookkeeping, invoicing, etc. Why isn't that done? Because Excel gets complicated and confusing the bigger it gets.

However, as long as no special software is procured (e.g. time recording system, ERP system, BI reporting system, etc.), Excel is often the simplest, most flexible and cheapest solution.

And if the Excel file contains a long list of business transactions that are somehow relevant to accounting, an automatic import into the accounting software can be discussed.
